On March 18, 2026, Meta officially announced it was shutting down Horizon Worlds on VR — the virtual reality social platform that was supposed to be the future of human connection. The app gets pulled from the Quest store at the end of March and goes fully dark on VR by June 15, 2026.

Just like that, the metaverse is dead.

But if you think this story starts with VR headsets and ends with an embarrassing shutdown, you’re missing the bigger picture.
